Why A Seat Creator

Leadership grounded in real experience.

“You deserve a partner who understands nonprofit leadership from the inside.”

Kynesia Bishop, Ed.D., has spent her career inside nonprofit leadership — not adjacent to it. As a former executive director and chief impact officer, she has led organizational strategy, built cross-functional teams, and managed high-stakes stakeholder relationships across healthcare and higher education.

In the boardroom and the community, she has guided governance decisions, executive transitions, and strategic planning processes. Her work as Community Needs Assessment Director with the Junior League helped shape policy conversations around House Bill 404, bridging grassroots insight with legislative advocacy.

That combination — executive perspective and hands-on implementation — is what A Seat Creator brings to every engagement. She knows what it feels like to sit in your seat, which means the solutions are built for real teams, real budgets, and real missions.

Sustainability During a Recession: What Growing Nonprofits Should Do Now

September 1, 2026

+

Recessions hit nonprofits from both directions at once. Demand for services goes up right as revenue — individual giving, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships — tightens. For a founder- or ED-led organization already stretched thin, that squeeze can feel sudden even when the warning signs were there for months.

The nonprofits that come through a downturn intact aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones that treated sustainability as an operating discipline before the recession started, not a crisis response after it hit. Here’s where to focus.

  1. Know your real runway — Most organizations know their bank balance. Fewer know their actual runway — how many months of operations that balance covers if revenue dropped 20%, 30%, or more tomorrow. If you can’t answer that in a sentence, that’s the first gap to close, not a nice-to-have.
  2. Diversify before you’re forced to — Organizations relying on one or two major funding sources are the most exposed when a recession hits — because that’s exactly when a single foundation or major donor is most likely to pull back. Diversification isn’t just a fundraising talking point; it’s risk management. Individual giving, earned revenue, membership models, and government contracts all move on different cycles, so a mix cushions the shock better than depth in one lane.
  3. Protect donor relationships, not just donor dollars — In tight years, the instinct is to cut communications spending along with everything else. That’s usually backwards. Recessions are when donor stewardship matters most — the organizations that stay visible, transparent about need, and specific about impact are the ones donors stick with when they do have to choose where their shrinking giving goes.
  4. Separate ‘core mission’ from ‘nice to have’ now, not later — Every program can’t survive every downturn. The organizations that navigate this well have already done the harder work of ranking programs by mission-centrality and cost-to-sustain before they’re forced to cut in a panic. That ranking should live with your board, not just in your head — it’s a governance conversation, not just an operational one.
  5. Build slack into your systems, not just your budget — A lot of nonprofit ‘capacity’ is actually just people working past sustainable limits. In a recession, that slack disappears fastest, and burnout follows. This is where operational efficiency — documented workflows, the right (not necessarily the most expensive) systems, and honest staffing plans — becomes a sustainability issue, not just a nice-to-have process improvement.

The uncomfortable truth — Sustainability planning is easiest to justify when things are going well and easiest to skip when they’re not. But a recession doesn’t create new vulnerabilities in an organization — it just exposes the ones that were already there. The work of shoring those up is exactly the kind of thing that’s hard to do alone, in the middle of running programs and managing a board.

If any of this sounds like where your organization is right now, that’s a conversation worth having before the next downturn forces it.
